There’s A Big Difference Between A Liberal And A Democrat
by Gordon Bishop (4/14/08)
A lot of Democrats are angry at me because my weekly syndicated columns consistently criticize “Liberalism.”
What amazes me is that those who are active members of the Democrat Party long ago gave the Democrat Party to the liberals and socialists, thus destroying the ‘people’s’ party of Presidents Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy.
Truman and Kennedy were my “role models” growing up in the 1940s and ‘50s and maturing in the 1960s and ‘70s.
Like the great one, Ronald Reagan declared, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party - the Democratic Party left me!”
Reagan was so Right!
There are actually two parties: The Democrat Party and the Liberal Party.
Both Presidential candidates, U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, are liberal Democrats. In fact, Obama is twice as liberal as Clinton, based on their voting records in the U.S. Congress.
First, let’s set the record straight about Democrats and Democracy.
Democrats (and even some Republicans) continue to call America a “Democracy.”
Wrong!
America was founded as a “Constitutional Republic” - NOT a democracy.
Just read the Greek Philosopher Plato’s “The Republic,” written more than 2,000 years ago. Plato wrote: “A democracy lead to anarchy,” which is ‘Mob Rule!”
No where in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights or the Declaration of Independence that launched a new nation (namely, America) can you find the word “democracy.” Our nation’s founders were smart leaders and knew what “democracy” had done to countless countries and civilizations over the past 2,000 years or more.
I decided to write this column because one of my best and longest friends, Victor Scuderi, called to inform me there was a “rumor” making its way through the Monmouth County political system that was absolutely incorrect.
The fallacious rumor had to do with Scuderi’s company, Airport Plaza Shopping Center in Hazlet. Vic told me that the rumor involved me because of my syndicated column that appears in the Bayshore Courier newspaper. The rumor was that Scuderi was going to stop his Airport Plaza full page color ad in The Courier because of Gordon Bishop’s columns always deriding the Democrat Party.
Vic told me that he reads The Courier because my column appears in The Courier.
“Gordon,” he said, “I’ve been reading your weekly columns since they started appearing in the Newark Star-Ledger in the early 1970s. You were and still are one of my favorite columnists.”
Vic and I go back almost 40 years ago!
I told my long-time friend (and “fan”) that I would write a column to clear the air about our relationship.
About a year ago, I wrote a column on Scuderi (which also appeared in The Courier) that he was my favorite Democrat. Scuderi is also chairman of the Monmouth County Democratic Party.
What Democrats should know is that I like the old Democrat party of years gone by, but I do not like liberals or liberalism.
For the record, I am an Independent, Fiscal Conservative Libertarian. How ‘bout that?
