‘Are Teachers’ Unions Un-American?’

Thomas Jefferson once said, “To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.” In 2008 his words are more than an apt description of the relationship that many of our nation’s educators have with the teachers’ unions. The fact that public school teachers in most states have no choice but to pay tribute in the form of dues to the unions is certainly tyrannical and therefore un-American.
The California Teachers Association (CTA), the state affiliate of the nation’s largest teachers’ union, the National Education Association (NEA), frequently backs controversial measures which many of their members, as well as mainstream America, do not support. The CTA has recently been active in such areas as the promotion of same sex marriage and advocating that Communists be allowed back in the classroom to teach our children. At the same time, the union is fighting the passage of SB 1105, which would get rid of teachers who have committed a misdemeanor sexual offense. The unions never bother to ask their membership for input on whether or not they back such controversial measures, but agree or not, teachers must fork over their money to the union. Full Piece
